For readers interested in Bitcoin, I’ve been tracking some of the responses to the alleged tracking down of Bitcoin’s creator, the infamous Satoshi Nakamoto, by NEWSWEEK.
This week the mainstream propaganda outlet’s Leah McGrath Goodman claimed—based on, apparently, nothing—to have uncovered the elusive crypto-currency genius in Temple City, California in the person of Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto, or Dorian for short.
The following links and blurbs begin with the NEWSWEEK article that kicked off this latest MSM farce, and end with a video of Dorian himself—who obviously was not enjoying his forced fifteen minutes of fame—denying any connection to the creator of Bitcoin.
Enjoy!
Far from leading to a Tokyo-based whiz kid using the name “Satoshi Nakamoto” as a cipher or pseudonym (a story repeated by everyone from Bitcoin’s rabid fans to THE NEW YORKER), the trail followed by NEWSWEEK led to a 64-year-old Japanese-American man whose name really is Satoshi Nakamoto. He is someone with a penchant for collecting model trains and a career shrouded in secrecy, having done classified work for major corporations and the US military.
How Bitcoin’s Not So Secret Satoshi Nakamoto Was Discovered
Some remain skeptical that Newsweek have found him but making such a bold claim is aggressive and comments from Bitcoin lead developer Gavin Anderson suggest this is the real Satoshi.
NEWSWEEK Claims To Have Identified the Creator of Bitcoin
I have very mixed feelings about the accuracy of today’s article from NEWSWEEK regarding its claim to have discovered the identity of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. On the one hand, you’d think a major magazine would not make such a bold claim without extensive research and a high degree of certainty. Then again, this is NEWSWEEK.
Rumors have swirled for years. Exactly who created Bitcoin? The answers are as vast as the conspiracies surrounding the crypto-currency. According to a lengthy interview conducted by NEWSWEEK’s Leah Goodman, Satoshi Nakamoto has been hiding in plain sight for years. The name was thought to be a pseudonym. As it turns out, it wasn’t.
Denial, Outrage & Acceptance: Reactions to Satoshi Nakamoto’s “Unmasking”
Unsurprisingly, the declaration sent tremors through the bitcoin community and drew a range of reactions, though the most vocal were those who protested the report and the methods of its author Leah McGrath Goodman.
Forensic Analyst on NEWSWEEK Story Explains Convergence of Dorian Nakamoto
It now appears a toss-up as to whether Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto is the same Satoshi Nakamoto who created Bitcoin. NEWSWEEK reporter Leah McGrath Goodman continues to stand by her assertion that the Temple City, California resident created the worldwide digital currency phenomenon. Dorian Nakamoto denies it.
Did Satoshi Nakamoto post [this] message to his P2P Foundation page that has been silent since February 11 of 2009?
Has the Real Satoshi Posted for the First Time in Five Years?
Last night, the Bitcoin world was abuzz with chatter that the real creator of Bitcoin had emerged for the first time in five years to discredit NEWSWEEK’s “unmasking” story. I was skeptical of the NEWSWEEK story right off the bat, which read like a page-view baiting tabloid, rather than serious investigative journalism.
“Donate to Dorian” Bitcoin Address Created
Kudos to Andreas Antonopoulos for taking the lead on this. As time passes, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Dorian Nakamoto is not the creator of Bitcoin, but rather a reclusive old man who just had his life turned upside down by a frenzied press.
One Does Not Simply Find Satoshi Nakamoto
NEWSWEEK is not the first publication to try and reveal the identity of the mystery man. What was so different this time around? First of all, bitcoin is bigger and better-known, used frequently as headline “link bait.” Secondly, this was not the work of blogger or a niche website. NEWSWEEK has quite a reputation, or at least it used to.
And finally, from Dorian’s own mouth …
